Special Guest Speaker: Bev Thornton

Bev Thornton has been the Executive Director of Alberta SouthWest Regional Economic Development Alliance (AlbertaSW) since its formation in 2002.

This partnership of 15 rural municipalities has received over 30 provincial, national, and international awards for projects that work to advance economic development in key industry sectors in the southwest region: agriculture, renewable energy, innovative technology, and tourism.

AlbertaSW is a founding member of the transboundary Crown of the Continent Geotourism Council and has met the standards to be named to the Green Destinations International list of “Top 100 Global Sustainable Destinations” for the past 5 years. AlbertaSW became an Accredited Economic Development Organization (AEDO) in 2018, the third of only 5 in Canada. Bev is a Past President of Economic Developers Alberta (EDA), 2013 Economic Developer of the Year. and the first Canadian to receive the International Economic Development Council (IEDC) Jeffrey A. Finkle Award for Organizational Leadership.

Bev is honoured to have been awarded The Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal in April 2003.

Bev has a Bachelor of Education (B. ED) from the University of Saskatchewan and began her career as a high school teacher in Claresholm and Pincher Creek. She has experience as an elected official, and over 25 years with the Province of Alberta as career consultant, contract manager and regional director for economic development.

Bev is an enthusiastic cheerleader for regional collaboration and is excited about the opportunities and potential in rural communities.
